The scenario depicted in these paintings and drawings may seem surreal, but was actually a bathroom in a neglected attic of the museum where I once worked. Old animal trophies were stored up there and I stumbled upon them quite unexpectedly one day. It was an astounding and compelling sight. This group of works followed my first explorations of dead animals; they were less about the "personality" of the object or any such subtext and more about the essential visual forms involved.
The small ink drawings borrow technique and execution from the previous rice paper series. The mid-sized drawings felt like preparation more advanced treatment. And the oil paintings are assiduously "realistic" which legitimized (for me, at the time) this excursion into fantasy.

The work in this group is related to personal experience: the abandoned hulks of dead trains rusting in nearby graveyards and the congested subterranean caverns of my daily commute.

Living as I did, at the edge of NY Harbor, I had the opportunity to explore this subject matter daily. I found it beautiful and continually fascinating. Over time, the mountains of stuff would be shifted around and new configurations revealed. As well, my approach to this work changed from water media (acrylic) on paper to oil on canvas; and the paint handling underwent its own metamorphosis. The last pictures in the series are well on their way to abstraction.
The rendering of these subjects is completely unpredictable; they are full of accident and unexpected resolution. Even the tools I used: brushes, sponges, knives, needles, sticks, fingers and thumbs, are completely ad hoc. The picture, rag-tag and all mixed-up is always an adventure in improvisation. For this reason I keep returning to the imagery of the junkyard. The imagery demands whatever technique I can throw at it and the less contrived, the better.

With a couple of exceptions, all these scenes are within a mile of my studio, at the harbor's edge. There is a feeling of dereliction and neglect about the places; the abandoned train shed, the lonely underpass, the solitary guard tower. They derive a strange energy from their proximity to the water.

For a few years, my partner & I had a press in the studio. I discovered the beauty of monotypes, wherein the ghost of an image remaining on the plate becomes the basis for the next image, thereby creating series that would cohere without effort. This grouping is the result of two different of these series.
