These transparency paintings started around 2009. They are frankly based on photography; in fact the camera can be seen in several of the pictures, along with the artist, in a kind of self-portrait.
The work is technically complicated because of the inherent layering of the image elements. Color, which appears bright and attractive to the eye degrades in the camera to a putty color after it passes through a window and is then reflected back & forth several times. Scale becomes unexpectedly distorted such that the pictorial information seems falsely small. The challenge is to identify the salient features and preserve them accurately through the many layers of imagery.
There is a psychological effect as well, having to do with being outside something and looking in, as a passerby, an outcast or a voyeur. Juxtapositions of imagery create unexpected subtexts.

In the mid-90s, we had a small press in the studio. It inspired a number of projects and introduced me to the idea of multiples with variation.
These linocuts use the same block surprinted with changes in color, position and orientation to create a sensation of motion.

Collage, using pre-made elements, removes the fear of failure attendant on attempts
to "create" something from nothing. It involves rather the willingness to discover what is already there, and the freedom to recognize and make associations.
I found it very helpful to start an image without preconceived ideas and let the
material at hand determine the direction of the work. I admit to feeling inhibition when
I begin to control the elements rather than letting them speak for themselves. It is an
ongoing struggle.

Like collage, mathematical form studies can be therapeutic in times of emotional turmoil. This idea came at a particularly difficult time in my life and allowed me to lose myself in the beauty of the idea.
A concept worked out in small form studies, based on subtraction, I was forced to go study a little calculus to bring it to a proof. The result is an idea which can be expressed as: the nth order differences between the nth powers of successive integers are all equal and they are all equal to n!
The models in this series illustrate aspects of the proof in visual terms, but for obvious reasons, can only be taken as far as the 3rd power.

I became aware of my synaesthesia (ordinary grapheme-color type) in elementary school and made some early, but insubstantial attempts to quantify it. These small watercolors done in my twenties are the first systematic record; and although they were done with limited means, are fairly accurate in that they introduce subsidiary colors that enhance the subliminal impression.
This alphabet has remained consistent all my life.

I learned to read and write around the age of four. This event was accompanied by a profound depression, that I remember well, in which the glory and magic of written words were reduced to a pedestrian chore. For this reason I find the whole "Sesame Street" approach to reading abhorrent. It seems to assume that pre-literacy has no value to the child and the sooner corrected the better. I can't imagine worse harm to the child's private life, fantasy life and imagination. (Of course, this entire argument presupposes that children are kept away from digital devices during their early development.)
To this day, I indulge in "fake" writing for the pure pleasure of filling a page with meaning known only to myself. This is not at all the same as writing in lost languages, hieroglyphics or science fiction. It is a form of play and structured self-expression.
