A proposed project revisiting the imagery of the 1990s rust painting. The series would be executed as digital murals, closer in scale to the actual mountains they depict, intended to immerse the viewer in the enormity of the subject. These images have an eerie beauty despite their base origin.

These animals began life somewhere in the Belgian Congo. They were killed, stuffed and mounted for display during the heyday of colonial conquest; they embody Victorian beliefs and values, and demonstrate what the colonizers thought was their mission: to "civilize" the subject peoples. Belgium, late to the game, waged a particularly brutal and ruthless campaign.
I have removed the animals from the context in which I found them, at the Africa Museum outside of Brussels, just as they had been removed over a century ago by their conquerors for the purpose of aggrandizing their colonizing mission. These animals (now objects) have been preserved with attitudes representative of that moralistic, european, christian tradition.
I have been struck by my own emotional reactions to the "types" depicted and sought to distill the character (i.e., hyena=malevolence, perversity; buffalo=docility). Science & culture have moved beyond these notions, yet the same prevail today cloaked in the guises of various characters in popular culture, cartoon characters, for example.

These are ideas for possible large-scale treatment, perhaps in oil on canvas. Experience has taught me to make small preliminary studies in an attempt to analyze logistics and probability of success (or failure) before investing time and material in major works.
Often, the informal piece is enough to satisfy and it allows me to move forward quickly. In many cases, these studies have merit on their own terms.

There was a Burchfield show at the Whitney which featured a watercolor from 1929, depicting piles of scrap iron, very reminiscent of my rust paintings. Seeing it was wonderfully validating for me.
