We live in a material world; we are physical beings; we make connections between objects through images and language. This series runs the gamut from the ordinary (an egg) to the improbable (the duck).
Most of the things are circular, round, or at least, curvilinear. The pointed geometry of Kepler's Star is essentially a sphere; the ball of string, a sloppy sphere; the drainpipe, a segment of a circle. This was not intentional—it just happened that way.

The images in this series come from a scrapyard at the edge of NY Harbor, near my studio.
Places like this are now off-limits. At the time, I was free to roam and found inspiration in the endless mountains of utilitarian form slowly returning to its element. The palette was severely restricted to oxides, indigo and black with only hints of accent color.

Living as I did, at the edge of NY Harbor, I had the opportunity to explore this subject matter daily. I found it beautiful and continually fascinating. Over time, the mountains of stuff would be shifted around and new configurations revealed. As well, my approach to this work changed from water media (acrylic) on paper to oil on canvas; and the paint handling underwent its own metamorphosis. The last pictures in the series are well on their way to abstraction.
The rendering of these subjects is completely unpredictable; they are full of accident and unexpected resolution. Even the tools I used: brushes, sponges, knives, needles, sticks, fingers and thumbs, are completely ad hoc. The picture, rag-tag and all mixed-up is always an adventure in improvisation. For this reason I keep returning to the imagery of the junkyard. The imagery demands whatever technique I can throw at it and the less contrived, the better.

This series began as pencil sketches back in the '80s. They function as a sort of dramatis personae, a cast of female characters posing either as aspects of a single personality or a group of different women.
The paintings are named for the Pleiades; the drawings are made-up names.

The Statue of Liberty is practically in my backyard; I have seen it every day in every weather, season and time of day. My father saw it as a young boy when he first arrived in the US by boat. It's special symbolic significance is augmented by these variations.
